Wa alaykum salam. If you genuinely like him and want something serious that can lead to marriage, you can let someone do that on your behalf if you're shy. If you can do it yourself, go straight to the point, let him know your intentions and give his reply instantly. If it's not genuine feelings that can lead to marriage, please disregard this post, I don't have any advice for you
